Omniscience means ‘all knowing’. You can usually find it in sentences describing God – not a social media company. But over the years people have been regularly mystified at LinkedIn’s ability to know who their friends and acquaintances are. It’s creepy.
If you aren’t a member then you’ve probably received apparently personal email invitations from friends encouraging you to join. But these same people will tell you they never sent the emails. Then if you do join LinkedIn you’ll see a list of all kinds of people you know. But how? How does this company with 400 million members worldwide know who you know?
LinkedIn’s company slogan is, ‘Relationships Matter’! What kind of relationships? The kind that help you make money. Some employers don’t even bother looking at resumes these days. They don’t want to be persuaded by nice paper or pretty pictures. They just want to compare the details of LinkedIn profiles. Maybe this is why LinkedIn keeps winning new members. People just can’t afford not to belong.
But back to omniscience… The God who’s revealed himself in history and in the Bible is just that – the boss of the world. He knows everything about each of us. And he cares for us deeply.
On one occasion Jesus taught a large crowd about the only relationship that really matters – a relationship with God. Jesus told them about the power and omniscience of God saying, ‘Indeed, the hairs of your head are all numbered’. But, if his listeners were inclined to be afraid, Jesus told them in the next breath not to be. Because God was not against them – he was for them.
To another large crowd Jesus said, ‘All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out’. So being linked in with Jesus means being linked in with God. Which means the biggest relationship choice you will ever make in life is not what social network to join but whether to get to know Jesus… the most important person of all.
Prayer. Dear God, thank you for the living relationship I can have with you through Jesus.
Verse. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. (John 6:37)
